Perfectionism

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, perfectionism is the “disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable.”  Anything short of perfection as being unacceptable—even in knowing this, it’s something that I’ve tried to obtain.  Continuously!  Although I’ve said aloud numerous times, “I’m not perfect,” I still strived towards this unattainable target of perfectionism until it almost crippled steps towards my dreams and goals.

Recently, I self-published my first novel, “Back to You.”  This book, its characters, and the story have been in my heart since middle school.  Granted, the characters and their storylines have developed over time (as have I), but the story was one that I needed to tell.  It’s one with a message that God wanted me to release.  Nonetheless, perfectionism and fear almost kept the message from getting out.  The message was one that I nearly pulled back and kept inside.

Regardless of my knowing that perfectionism is unobtainable, I wanted the novel to be perfect.  In dotting my I’s, crossing my T’s, and completing the writing process, perfectionism was to be there!  Yet it wasn’t.  Why?  Because there are still areas in which I need to grow as a person, author, and writer that could only be developed in time.  This was my first novel and would provide the foundation for where I am going.  It’s the beginning of my authorship journey and where God is taking me.  However, I almost lost sight of this while seeking perfectionism.

Sometimes, it’s easier to say, “I’m not perfect,” while actions and feelings reveal that I want to be.  I want to do the right thing, the right way, at the right time.  Efficiency does have its place, which sometimes falls in line with perfectionism, but these cannot have and consume me.  Overall, it’s about progress and not about being perfect.  I’m accepting this more and more.

In dealing with perfectionism, God is truly working on me!  He’s showing me the control perfectionism had on me.  I am now releasing this hold with every step of progress made.  I’m walking in progress, (per Merriam-Webster):

“A forward or onward movement (as to an objective or to a goal)” and “gradual betterment.”

Praising God for progress!

Until next time.

Blessings,

  1. Inspirational testimony. This blog encourages one
to take the next step and not allow the underlying issue “fear” to paralyze one from reaching goals.
    Thank you Lisi!
