Self-Care is Necessary

In recent years, I’ve found that more people are not only becoming aware of self-care, but are also discovering what it means to them.  The number of people I know who’ve worked themselves to burnout has decreased.  Instead the actions that led to burnout have been replaced with the knowledge and steps of walking in self-care.

A quick search on the Merriam-Webster website defines self-care simply as, “Care for oneself.”  This care would look different for each individual; something else to consider, is that this could also look different from day-to-day.  For me, self-care can be anything from spending time with my husband to taking a nap to reading a good book to purchasing something for myself to going on a vacation and more.  All of these are important in my self-care and overall life journey.

BUT what happens when someone delays the necessity of self-care and the importance of putting self first?  At times, I’ve found this hard to do and can see in those around me that they have too.  It comes down to being intentional about making oneself as important as one makes others.  There are things that come easy to do for others that are difficult or challenging to do for self.  For example, would you give a friend the advice not to take a well-earned day off to recalibrate and rest?  Likely not; you’d probably encourage this person to take the one day off and a few more.  So, why not do the same for yourself?  You are important too!

Starting today and throughout this week, take the first simple step(s) you need to towards your self-care.  Don’t wait until you’re forced to take a break (or worse) to do so!!

Remember the following Bible verse:  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. -Ps 139:14 NKJV

You are worth the benefits of what self-care will bring you.  God made you in His image and wants what’s best for you in every aspect of your life.  You have to believe this for yourself through your heart, mind, and actions.

Until next time.

Blessings,

  1. A wonderful and timely reminder, especially for me! As a caregiver for 2 family members, I have to be reminded to do this intentionally.
